Purpose

The World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY), published by the Institute for Development Management (IMD), analyzes and ranks the ability of economies to create and maintain an environment that sustains the competitiveness of enterprises. Evaluations are made on the national environment of a participating country in the Yearbook, which are divided into four main factors: (1) economic performance; (2) government efficiency; (3) business efficiency; and (4) infrastructure. Each factor is further subdivided into sub-factors, measured by 327 criteria which highlight every facet of the national environment.

In 2010, the World Competitiveness Yearbook provides extensive coverage of 58 economies, all key players in world markets. This is the first time Qatar had been included in the survey, together with Kazakhstan. The General Secretariat for Development Planning (GSDP) coordinated the study with IMD and the Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA).

In particular to the Qatar economy, the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2010 endeavors to achieve the following:

  • evaluate the performance of Qatar’s economy;
  • illustrate the extent to which government policies are conducive for competitiveness;
  • illustrate the extent to which enterprises are performing in an innovative, profitable and responsible manner; and
  • illustrate the extent to which human, scientific, technological and basic resources meet the needs of businesses.
